Things to do in Wexford with Kids when it’s Raining

I first wrote about thing to do in Wexford when it’s wet in 2016 but there are some changes so here’s the new version.

By Wexford,  I mean County Wexford, mostly North Wexford as that’s where I live. By wet, well, take it whatever way you want it. Since Wexford is relatively dry compared to the west coast, so wet day here might not register as wet to those from soggier climes so brave it, you’re on your holidays after all!

Welcome to the real Sunny South East, part of Ireland’s Ancient East. We’re really sorry that it’s raining while you’re here, but the strawberries need it.

Things to Do in Wexford when It’s Wet.

Playcentres. Sorry. I thought I’d just get this out of the way. We all know that soft play is hell on earth on wet days, especially when there are parties there too, but it’s doable. Kidzone (Gorey Business Park, signposted opposite Tesco) soft play is a good one in that it’s small enough that you are unlikely to lose your children and it’s cleaner than many. There are two soft plays in Wexford (Playzone and Leisure Max)   Playbarn in New Ross has reopened under new management too.

Pirates’ Cove in Courtown offers soft play, slot machines and bowling (and crazy golf for dry days). You could do a tour of the slot machine places, there’s a big one called Flanagan’s Wharf too near the sea in the village.

Cinema: Movies at Gorey does a 7-day very cheap Kids’ Club  with a good range of movies to choose from. I know it’s not original to say “it’s wet, let’s go to the cinema” but it’s a good plan. , just book online before you go to avoid disappointment, especially on a wet day. There’s also two cinemas in Wexford town, Arc in the town centre, and Omniplex cinema in Drinagh outside the town.

Go Swimming: Courtown Leisure Centre is open to the public and has swimming including a small kids’ play area and a huge flume tube slide, open at various times. Wexford Swimming PoolEnniscorthy Swimming Pool and The Apex in New Ross are all options too, check their websites in advance for public hours.

Kia-ora Mini Farm. On a showery day you can enjoy a lot of Kia-Ora’s indoor facilities including the fire engine rides, feeding animals and the sandpits.

The Farm Shop in Tinahely (yes, I know it’s in Wicklow) has an indoor Activity Barn, and does lovely lunches and cakes. (Try the lemon meringue).

Enniscorthy Castle

Enniscorthy Castle You could do worse than spend an hour here, and hope the rain clears for a few minutes so you can get out on the roof to see the views.

Hook Lighthouse  The views won’t be quite as good but the new lighthouse tour and art workshops operate in all weathers, and on rough days the seas look fantastic.

Loftus Hall on the Hook Peninsula has haunted house tours, suitable for older kids.

Beach Yes really, blow the cobwebs off with a walk on the beach in the drizzle and feel the salt on your lips to feel alive. There’s no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes.

The Woods You can still enjoy a lovely walk in Courtown Woods in the spilling rain last weekend, the canopy keeping you dry for most of it and the kids puddle jumping.

Go shopping: Gorey is boutique Mecca, and with over 50 places in town to buy a coffee or drink there’s refreshments too. Check out our favourites here.

Bowling. Leisuremax in Wexford and Pirates’ Cove in Courtown both offer bowling.

The Library Wexford, Gorey and Bunclody libraries have lots of events on throughout the year,  for more information check here

Hope you find something fun to do, and that your wet days in Wexford are few, but if they’re not pull on your raincoat and stand into your wellies and remember, you’re on your holidays, enjoy it!
