Bumbles Family Travels: Glencar Lake and Waterfall, Leitrim

We spend several weekends every year visiting Granny in Sligo. We’re creatures of habit and the very long journey means that we don’t tend to venture too far, the dunes in Strandhill are usually the height of our exploration (and worth a visit). On our most recent visit I was determined to act like a tourist so we planned a trip to Glencar.

Glencar Lake is situated 8 miles north of Sligo town, on the Manorhamilton Road in County Leitrim. Before the waterfall we stopped for a wander in the woods, the kids love trampling around between the trees.

The kids spent ages in the small playground, which has to have one of the best views in Ireland, before we decided to lunch in the tea rooms. There’s been a tea room on the site
forever and a day but the present incarnation Glencar Teashed is very pleasant indeed, serving delicious homemade soups and brown bread, and a variety of sandwiches and cakes, all served with a view of the lake.

You won’t spend the day here but it’s a lovely stop. We diverted back to Sligo the long way around Glenade Lake and on to Mullaghmore.
