Review: Wholesome: Feed your Family Well for Less

I was delighted to be asked to review a new cookbook by one of the first food bloggers that I got to know on twitter, Caitriona Redmond who blogs at

Caitriona has just published her first cookbook “Wholesome- Feed your Family Well for Less” and is now regularly featured in national papers and has even had a recent TV appearance. Caitriona was a great help and encouragement to me when I started out in blogging and it’s great to see her “going pro”.

Caitriona is a mum of two young boys and stepmum to a teenage girl. Having been made redundant and becoming stay at home mum she started her food blog which has gone from strength to strength and has carved out a new career as a food writer, with regular gigs with My Kidstime and Flogas among others. She really is inspiration for us all that if you are determined enough and work hard enough you can achieve your dreams.

Readers of Wholesome Blog enjoy Caitriona’s recipes which show that wallet friendly food doesn’t have to be boring and that you can have a great variety of food and treats too on a small budget by planning well and shopping smart.

Caitriona’s approach to food is frugal, fresh and simple, using in season produce, (often self grown in her case) she also knows how to get the best value whether it’s at the butcher’s or in the supermarket yellowstickers section.

The book is beautifully put together and each dish was cooked and photographed by Caitriona in her kitchen and then eaten by the family, real food for real people.

There are lots of great moneysaving tips – She recommends running your kitchen like a business and managing waste, something I really could do with practising more.

Recipes range from breakfast bars to Eton Mess Cake, with dinners, snacks and a whole chapter dedicated to what to do with a roast chicken to make it go as far as possible.

Despite the “wholesome” title there are still lots of treats in the book- I’ve bookmarked the Marmalade Cake and the Eton Mess Cake as my favourites to try out.

Wholesome is bursting to the seams with beautiful photographs of frugal family food and would be an excellent addition to any cookbook shelf.
